With Nicola Connally of Nunaïa Beauty
We’ve asked Skincare & Wellness Expert Nicola Connolly, Founder of Nunaïa Beauty, one of our gorgeous Irish skincare brands to share her top tips on how to superpower your Autumn skincare routine to not only nurture and restore skin health but also bring a greater sense of calm and balance.
“Autumn is one of my favourite seasons with the beautiful colours and frosty mornings, but Autumn can disturb our skin’s sensitive balance. Sudden temperature changes and drier air means our skin can become sensitized and dry and dehydrated.
Here are my top tips when it comes to caring for your skin as we transition into the autumn months.”
Maintain a Healthy Diet
Whether you like it or not, what you’re eating is having a direct impact on your skin. You can however use this to your advantage by consuming healthy foods like fruit, vegetables and grains that are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I tend to up my intake of leafy greens around this time and supplement with some essential fatty acids.
Skincare tip: Look for products that contain essential fatty acids like Nunaïa’s Nourishing Radiance Serum which contains avocado and chia to deeply nourish and help reduce redness and inflammation in the skin.
Practice Gentle and Effective Cleansing
Some cleansers and exfoliators can be particularly irritating and stripping to the skin. Your skin needs to retain as much moisture as possible during the autumn season,
Try and use a nourishing, hydrating formulation when cleaning your face that won’t strip or dry out your skin. Nunaïa’s Superfood Cleansing Balm can be used as a regular cleanse, as part of a double cleanse routine, and as a hydrating facial mask, so it’s a real multi-tasker.
The new breed of natural cleansers naturally and gently exfoliate the skin, remove dirt and makeup effectively, but don’t strip or disrupt your skin barrier. What’s not to love?
Most importantly…Moisturize!
Your skin needs moisture and lots of it, especially if you already suffer with dry skin. It is a step that simply cannot be missed. After cleansing your face or having a shower, be sure to moisturize. As we come into Autumn I love using a richer, hydrating serum like the award-wining Nourishing Radiance Serum and apply this to damp skin to lock in hydration.
You can also try placing a bowl of water on the radiator in your bedroom (a DIY humidifier if you like!) as this will gently humidify the room while you sleep keeping your skin hydrated.
My ideal skin routine coming into this cooler season looks something like this:
- I create a space of ritual by lighting a candle and closing the door of my bathroom for a few minutes of peace. My favourite is our Sacred Space Candle – the natural essential pills of lavender and geranium are divine! It’s my night-time ritual to help me prepare for sleep!
- I love to start with a gentle cleanse – I use Nunaïa’s Superfood Cleansing Balm as it calms my skin and lifts off unwanted dirt from the day without drying out my skin.
- Then If I have a little more time, I re-apply a thin layer of the balm to clean skin and leave for 20 minutes as a radiance-boosting face mask.
- My last step is to use a serum. I spend about 5 minutes following our Nunaïa ritual steps. This involves applying the Nourishing Radiance Serum through a gentle but targeted face massage. These few moments allow me to ease out any stress and tension in my jaw line and forehead and allows the product to penetrate into my skin. It’s one of the favourite parts of my day!
